Stunning pictures, Lady M! I'm wondering when the original walls were constructed, and for what purpose? They look extremely rugged, as if they had been meant to keep out some very determined enemy.

In Lucca, the walls were fortifications against marauding Pisans and Florentines - the City States were always at war with one another in those days. One forgets how relatively recently it was, that Italy became a unified state.

Apropos of something quite else though ... I was talking to my brother about blogging while we were in Italy, and mentioned you; and he remembered that when he was in Tibet recently (on Perma Frost business) he read or heard something about there having been a 'McLeod connection' with the spiriting-out to India of the Dalai Lama....

This seemed to bring to my mind something you had once mentioned yourself, and I was fascinated - but perhaps I am on the wrong track entirely?

Yes the walls surround and are, the fort which has views over the ocean and the valley and was used to guard the city of Rabat from marauders.

Interesting facts about Italy.

thank you for coming by.
