help wanted: geeks please listen up..

I can't get online at my friend's house in MA. I went to the local Barnes and Noble and accessed the wireless there, no worries. The Apple screen says: "Airport is connected to the network NUQC1. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." Thoughts? Suggestions? Hemlock? At times it was asking for a password and reading the network as WEP, but it is not... Argh! I NEED MY COMPUTER! I need access. I am feeling lightheaded... this is NOT good.

Oh no! You'll have to find a mall office there too. Ridiculous. I hope some techie can give advice to solve the problem. This is North America for heavens sake.

Starbucks is supposed to have WIFII out the Wazoo. Also Panera, if there is one near you. Good luck - I am offering suggestions but basically clueless...

I had this problem for two weeks in Tuscany in August. My son had a mobile-phone reader card which gave internet access - but only from the attic of the villa. And there WAS an internet cafe in the nearest town - but how can you write a blog sitting in a Tourist Info Offic with people in an impatient queue behind you?

In the end I gave up, just drank in the place and the life - and waited till I got home to write it up...

But as JMB says, North America should be better than that!

Hi KadyM , I'm far from being an Apple guru but try:-
Goto Applications / System Preferences
Then select Network
Then select Airport
then configure Airport
Make sure Airport is on automatic.
then on TCP/IP tab make sure it is set to Using DHCP (I suspect you may have this set to manual address)
Save settings and exit.
I will ask my guru friend later this evening as well

Seems to BE! I sit here at the Nashua (MA, usa) Barnes and Noble with my attwifi and marvel - what a world, but in a good way!

- "for heavens sake" you are adorable do you know that? I can just picture your lovely face when you say that! I miss your kinetic presence and your joyful spirit.

no joy on the solution but I figure if that's the worst problem I have this month, how lucky am I?

thank you for coming by.

Yes, STarbucks has wifi, but NO books! he he I'm pretty happy over here in the Barnes & Noble; all of you who know me, know that being surrounded by books WHILE online is just my idea of heaven! Hard to beat, well more comfy chairs would be nice... but on the other hand there is someone here to bring me cafe au lait... so there you go!

thank you for coming by.
